Can ‘Avengers’ Top ‘Avatar’ Or ‘Titanic’?

§ May 21st, 2012 § Filed under Uncategorized Comments Off

‘By the time ‘Avengers’ is done kicking box-office butt, it will easily be the #3 film of all time,’ one box-office expert tells MTV News.

“The Avengers” sure did assemble! Marvel’s superhero film is still the reigning champion of movie theaters after it smashed box-office records in its first two weeks. Now, it’s rising to the top of the worldwide charts, recently staking claim to the ninth spot, passing George Lucas’ “Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace.” It’s currently the highest earning film of 2012 domestically, stealing the title from “The Hunger Games,” which opened in March.

At present, the Joss Whedon-directed summer flick has raked in more than $1 billion across the globe, and the numbers keep rising. The popularity of the movie is overwhelming, but a few questions still remain. For starters, how high will the film go?

Gitesh Pandya, the editor of Box Office Guru, told MTV News, “I see Avengers climbing up to #4 on the all-time worldwide blockbusters list by the end of this weekend. That would put it at roughly $1.2 billion, which is astounding. It should pass the final ‘Harry Potter’ to finish its run as #3 all time, which alone is just incredible.”

Jeff Bock of Exhibitor Relations agrees: “By the time ‘Avengers’ is done kicking box-office butt, it will easily be the #3 film of all time. Only ‘Avatar’ and ‘Titanic’ will be left untouched, as James Cameron is a superhero unto himself. Both [films] made history by debuting over the holiday season, where popcorn flicks are few and far between. [And] unfortunately for ‘Avengers,’ summer blockbusters invade every weekend, and theaters will soon be flooded with competition.”

The competition Bock is referring to is obviously Christopher Nolan’s final Batman installment. “You know what happens when you leave Batman for dead? He gets angry, rises from the dead and pops you right in the kisser,” he said. ” ‘The Avengers’ versus ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ has all the trappings of a big-time Hollywood drama. Let’s face it, ‘TDKR’ is probably the most anticipated threequel since ‘Return of the Jedi.’ All bets are off!”

Boxoffice.com‘s Phil Contrino agrees that Nolan’s film could beat out “The Avengers” in the battle for overall domestic earnings, but ultimately won’t top the opening weekend or worldwide sales for two reasons. It just doesn’t have the widespread family appeal that Captain America and Iron Man brought with them, or the 3-D prices to give it a boost.

With “Battleship” sailing into theaters this weekend, Pandya expects “Avengers” to drop by around 40 percent. “[That will put it in] the neighborhood of $60 million,” he said. “That’s a great hold for a movie this big.”

But as far as Earth’s mightiest heroes becoming the highest — or even second-highest — film of all time globally, Contrino doesn’t believe it will happen. “When you burn so bright for one weekend, the only place to go is down,” he said.

Check out everything we’ve got on “Marvel’s The Avengers.”

Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Ball Kicks Off Amid Protests

Seoul, South Korea, set list heavy on new material, but Gaga’s biggest hits come out to play.
By John Mitchell

<P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/lady_gaga/artist.jhtml">Lady Gaga</a> kicked off her hotly awaited <i>Born This Way</i> Ball at Seoul, South Korea's Olympic Stadium on Friday (April 27) in front of 45,000 fans, and despite <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-17867102" target="_blank">protests</a> from Christian groups saying Mother Monster was "obscene" and could "taint" young people with her performance, the concert appears to have gone on without incident.</P><P>Intrepid Twitter fans are already showing off pictures and video of the <i>BTW</i> Ball's enormous Gothic castle backdrop and myriad costume changes, making it clear that Gaga has outdone even her own Monster Ball in terms of spectacle.</P><P>While we wait for reviews to trickle in from halfway around the world, one thing is certain: No minors were corrupted at the show. Earlier this month, the Korea Media Rating Board decided to <a href="http://newsroom.mtv.com/2012/04/02/lady-gaga-unfazed-by-south-korean-concert-age-restrictions/">elevate the age rating</a> for the concert from 12 to 18, prohibiting minors from seeing the concert. When the board notified Gaga's tour promotion company and a sponsor of the change in age restrictions, it did not offer a reason why the show &#8212; which at the time was still in rehearsals and had not been reviewed publicly &#8212; was considered unsuitable for children under 18.</P><P><CENTER><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:717952/cp~vid%3D717952%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A717952" width="430" height="242" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed></CENTER></P><P>The likely catalyst for the board's decision came more into focus as the concert neared and protests from a group of conservative Christians calling itself the Alliance for Sound Culture in Sexuality ramped up. The group <a href="http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-31749_162-57419977-10391698/lady-gagas-born-this-way-ball-met-by-protests-in-south-korea/" target="_blank">covered Seoul with posters</a> accusing Gaga of "spreading unhealthy sexual culture" through "lewd lyrics and performances."</P><P>The superstar and her fans, however, were undeterred. Though she <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/ladygaga/status/186886867118080000" target="_blank">tweeted</a> her hopes that the Korea Media Rating Board would reverse its decision (it didn't), she continued on as planned. Many fans reportedly arrived at the show wearing versions of Gaga's most well-known flamboyant costumes, and there have been no reports of disturbances at the concert.</P><P>Before the show, Gaga <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/ladygaga/status/195815732494348288" target="_blank">tweeted</a>, "I can you hear you Korea. I'm shaking."</P><P>Gaga's performance was heavy on material from her <i>Born this Way</i> album, though her biggest hits, including "Bad Romance," Poker Face" and "Just Dance," were represented.</P><P>Lady Gaga's <i>Born This Way</i> Ball set list:</P><P><b>&#187;</b> "Highway Unicorn" <br> <b>&#187;</b> "Government Hooker"<br> <b>&#187;</b> "Born This Way"<br> <b>&#187;</b> "Bloody Mary"<br> <b>&#187;</b> "Bad Romance"<br> <b>&#187;</b> "Fashion of His Love"<br> <b>&#187;</b> "The Queen"<br> <b>&#187;</b> "Just Dance"<br> <b>&#187;</b> "Love Game"<br> <b>&#187;</b> "Telephone"<br> <b>&#187;</b> "Just Dance"<br> <b>&#187;</b> "Heavy Metal Lover"<br> <b>&#187;</b> "Bad Kids"<br> <b>&#187;</b> "Hair"<br> <b>&#187;</b> "Yo&#252; and I"<br> <b>&#187;</b> "Electric Chapel"<br> <b>&#187;</b> "Americano"<br> <b>&#187;</b> "Poker Face"<br> <b>&#187;</b> "Schei&#223;e"<br> <b>&#187;</b> "The Edge of Glory"<br> <b>&#187;</b> "Marry the Night"</P><P><i>Did you see Lady Gaga's </i>Born This Way<i> Ball? Phillip Phillips vs. Jessica Sanchez: Who Will Win?

§ May 20th, 2012 § Filed under Uncategorized Comments Off

We’re down to two on American Idol. The final two. Phillip Phillips and Jessica Sanchez.

One is a young white male who is easy on the eyes and plays the guitar. In other words: the same exact pedigree as the last four winners.

The other has a beautiful voice and hasn’t been afraid all year long of tacking such major artists as Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey. She’s responsible for the single most memorable American Idol performance of the season.

Phillip Phillips and Jessica Sanchez

Either would be a worthy champion. Only one will wear the crown next Thursday night.

Who do you want it to be?

Mary J. Blige Dishes On Her ‘Crazy’ Led Zeppelin Covers

§ May 20th, 2012 § Filed under Uncategorized Comments Off

‘I’ve listened to their music since I was a child,’ says the R&B diva, who recorded ‘Stairway to Heaven’ and ‘Whole Lotta Love.’
By James Montgomery, with reporting by Larry Carroll

<P>You wouldn't peg Mary J Blige as the black-light-and-tapestry sort, but, as has become readily apparent in recent weeks, she absolutely loves Led Zeppelin.</P><P>In early February, reports began circulating that <a href="/news/articles/1631297/mary-j-blige-records-led-zeppelins-stairway-heaven.jhtml">Blige had re-recorded Zeppelin's classic "Stairway to Heaven,"</a> working with Travis Barker, "American Idol" judge Randy Jackson and guitarist Steve Vai on the track, which is slated to appear on the international reissue of her <i>Stronger With Each Tear</i> album, due Monday.</P><P></p><div style="margin: 0px 10px 10px 0px; float:left;"><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:491065" width="256" height="223" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" flashVars="configParams=instance%3Dnews%26vid%3D491065" allowFullScreen="true" wmode="transparent" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed></div><p></P><P>But after she had recorded "Stairway," Blige continued to get the Led out, covering <i>another</i> Zeppelin classic &#8212; the thunderous "Whole Lotta Love" &#8212; for the album too. And when MTV News caught up with her on the <i>Essence</i> Black Women in Hollywood red carpet, she told us all about channeling her inner Robert Plant for the tracks, a process that came much easier than you'd probably imagine.</P><P>"I did Led Zeppelin's 'Stairway to Heaven' and 'Whole Lotta Love' &#8212; it's crazy," she said. "I am a Led Zeppelin fan. I'm not going to say I've been to their concerts, but I've listened to their music since I was a child, and it's always moved me, especially 'Stairway to Heaven,' and 'Whole Lotta Love' is just fun."</P><P>Blige also said she recorded another new song &#8212; a "club record" called "I Can't Wait" &#8212; for the re-release. And while it's only slated to hit shelves outside the U.S., she hopes her fans will get a chance to hear all the new songs pretty soon.</P><P>"I want y'all to hear it," she laughed.</p>

Justin Bieber: ‘I Can’t Not Dance Battle Usher’

While Bieber is certainly known for his ability to cut a rug, he noted that his pal has the smoother of the dance moves.</P><P>"Dance-offs? We had one the other night. "He's just given me the advice of 'Always keep the people that were there in the beginning, keep them with you because those are the people that really care. They want to see you succeed,' " he said. "I think that's probably pretty much the main thing he's always told me."</P><P>Usher has even more to share about working with his superstar mentee. Kanye West doesn’t know how to do small, so whenever the rapper unveils a new project it’s almost always on the biggest platform possible. That explains why his new “short art film,” “Cruel Summer,” will debut on the fabulous Palm Beach in Cannes, France during the Cannes Film Festival.

The hush-hush movie, inspired by the upcoming all-star G.O.O.D. Music album
of the same name, will world premiere on May 23 and remain open to the public for two days afterward. It is being screened out of competition in Cannes amid the world-famous film fest.

And, this being Kanye, the project is described as, “a fusion of short film and art installation … an immersive ’7 screen experience’ for the eyes and ears unlike anything West has attempted before.” Among those listed as starring in the film are comedian Aziz Ansari, Kid Cudi, Lebanese actress Razane Jammal (“Djinn”) and Palestinian actor Ali Suliman (“The Kingdom”). Yeezy is listed as the producer, writer and director of the effort, based on a screenplay by Elon Rutberg, who was the associate director of the Throne’s “N—-s in Paris” video. The co-director is Alexandre Moors, who worked with West on “Runaway” as well as the “Paris” clip.

Kanye and Cudi were spotted filming scenes for the movie
earlier this year in the middle eastern nation of Qatar, but little or no information has emerged about the subject matter or plot of the project. Expectations are high given the over-the-top look and feel of ‘Ye’s last mini-flick, 2010′s “Runaway.” Click here for ticket information for the screenings.
